Tips for a Beginner at Product Photography

Photography has become a new trend. There was a time when only a few people pursue it as a professional career. However, social media has inspired many to discover their passion for photography. Also, the availability of advanced cameras and lenses and multiple types of photography have made it easier for people to enter this field.

Product photography is also a popular type. It takes its popularity from the increasing scope of business marketing. It has become an even more demanded skill as online businesses have started to flourish. And product photography is often what can make a difference for their business success.

If you are a beginner at product photography, then here are few tips to get further along your passion and career:

Get Creative

Capturing a product does not have to be boring. If it is about marketing, then you need to get creative with your photography as well. As a beginner, you will be apprehensive about trying odd or complex stuff but you have start somewhere. Most beginners will stick to capturing the solo product. Instead, try capturing it in a weird use. You can get inspiration from professional catalogs.

Hanging the Product

Not all products may fit this approach but this is in itself not a non-traditional approach. However, you can get creative with the hanging process as well. For example, you can hang the product sideways, upside down or an odd location. You can also use varying materials for hanging.

Creative Backgrounds

Most beginner photographers will stick to plain backgrounds. Most marketers may require this so the attention is not taken away from the product. However, marketing is becoming quite savvy and customers are also changing their perceptions. If you have the freedom, then you can choose fun backgrounds than going with boring and plain one. In fact, a creative background may even end up capturing the customer’s interest. It is all about how you stage the product against the background.

Lighting

Lighting plays a major role in any kind of photography. You might ask yourself if you want to go with natural or artificial lighting when capturing products. But it mostly about what the particular job requires. So you might want to consider what type of product you are working with and what kind of message the brand wants to convey.

Use of Filters

You might be tempted to use aesthetic filters for the photo you have taken. Although, just because you can use them does not mean you should. Photographers put hard effort into color balancing and brand consistency. The use of filters can disrupt the results. If you think a filter fits the brand’s requirements and does not take away from the quality of the picture, then go for it. Otherwise, you can do well without them too.

To keep getting better at product photography, practice your skills frequently. Discover new techniques and take advice from expert photographers. Peruse catalogs to get inspiration but don’t let your own style go to waste.
