How to Engage Your Core While Sitting at Your Desk

There are millions of people all over the world who are sat at their desks for hours every day. It’s important for our bodies to get the exercise they need to remain strong and healthy.

However, it’s difficult to do when you have a deadline to meet and you haven’t got time to leave your desk. The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to leave your desk to get the exercise you need. Here’s how to engage your core while working!

Leg Lift for Your Core

You’ll be amazed at how much core strength you can develop just by doing a simple leg lift. All you need to do is sit straight up in your seat, contract your abs and lift one leg up to about 6 inches above floor height.

Make sure your knee remains straight as you go. You should feel a slight pull in your abdomen as the leg lifts and you slowly lower it to the floor. Repeat the exercise using the other leg and do ten repetitions.

Sitting Crunch

You’ll need a sturdy and reliable chair for this one. Take a look at the Wobble Chair which can move with you as you exercise. Bring yourself to the edge of your chair and tilt yourself backward until the top of your back is touching the back of your chair.

Hold onto the handles of your chair and bring your knees up toward your chest. You can bring your chest down to meet your knees if you need to. After a few repetitions, you’ll start to feel this one.

Plank

The plank is a perfect office exercise because you can do it anywhere if there’s enough space. Find your floor space and get down onto your toes and elbows. It’s similar to a push-up position, except you don’t have to use your hands.

Hold that position for ten seconds, then relax. Repeat for 10 minutes to feel the benefit. If you’re brave enough, you could even try some side planks to work your obliques.

Bicycle Pedaling While Seated

You don’t always need a bike to work those core muscles and legs. Rest yourself on the edge of your seat, making sure you’re fully supported by the armrests. Move your body as you would on a bicycle, bringing your knees up and around.

Changing the speed at which you ‘pedal’ can exercise different muscles in your body and the time in which you spend doing the exercise can vary every day.
