So, let’s find out more in this article all about the hair restoration and how you can get benefit out of it.

What is Hair Restoration?

Hair restoration means the reversal of hair loss either by regrowing the hair, replacing the hair surgically, or replacing the hair cosmetically. Hair restoration can be done through treatments, surgically, or non-surgically.

Treatments can be done through medications, supplements, shampoos, oil, serums, etc. Treatments are done mostly at the initial stage of hair loss. The hair is restored quickly once the treatment is started at the right time. Surgically means hair transplants are done. Hair transplants are done to restore a partial area of baldness. Non-surgical hair restoration is basically hair wig made of synthetic or natural hair. It is mostly advised at the stage when there is complete baldness.

Hair loss can incur due to the following causes:

  • Genetics (Pattern baldness)
  • Diet
  • Trauma
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Stress
  • Medications
  • Age

What is Hair Transplant?

Hair Transplant is a surgical procedure in which a dermatologist or plastic surgeon removes hair follicles from one part of the head, called the ‘donor site’ to the bald part, called the ‘recipient site’. A hair transplant aims to restore hair growth in areas of the scalp with limited or no growth. Hair transplants are usually done under local anesthesia. The first hair transplant was done in 1939 in Japan with single scalp hair.

Types of Hair Transplants

The hair transplant is done under local anesthesia to numb the area. And before starting a transplant, the surgeon will sterilize the area where the hair will be removed.

The two main types of hair transplants are:

1.   Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular Unit Transplantation, also known as Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS), is a surgical procedure where a surgeon removes a strip of your scalp from the back of the head. The strip size is about 6 to 10 inches long. Then it is closed with the stitches. The surgeon and assistants then separate the scalp strip into smaller pieces with a scalpel. The piece can be separated into 2,000 smaller fragments, called grafts.

Then the surgeon makes small holes with a needle in your scalp where hair will be transplanted. Then the surgeon inserts hairs from the removed piece of scalp into the puncture holes. This step is called grafting. Once the grafting is done, they then cover the surgical sites with bandages or gauze.

The FUT procedures of less than 800 grafts can take about 4 hours, while sessions of 2500 grafts or more can take 8 hours or more.

2.   Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

On the other hand, FUE does not involve cutting a strip from the scalp. But the surgeon takes individual follicles out of the scalp skin using a tiny punch tool. Then the surgeon makes small holes in your scalp and grafts hair follicles into the holes. Once grafting is done, they then cover the surgical site with bandages or gauze. Larger sessions of FUE are divided between two days.

There is FUE No-Shave transplant also, that does not require the donor area to be shaved before transplantation. Instead, only the donor’s hairs are trimmed. In this way, it will not come into notice that you got FUE done.

As for recovery, some patients experience swelling for 1 week after surgery but are usually healed after 10 days. So, you need to take pain medications and antibiotics to be safe from infections.

Two more types of hair transplants offered by Forhair are Exosomes stem cell treatments and Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.

Exosomes stem cell treatments are a result of stem cell research. This treatment proves to regenerate hair growth and revitalize follicles that lead to thicker hair on your head. In Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, the blood supply to hair follicles is improved to trigger natural hair growth. This is done by withdrawing the patient’s blood, processing it, and then injecting it into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Side effects of Hair Transplant

Everything comes at a cost. And the most common side effect is scarring which cannot be avoided with any procedure. Other side effects that can heal within a few weeks include:

  • infections
  • crust or pus drainage around the surgical sites
  • scalp pain, itching, and swelling
  • inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)
  • bleeding
  • numbness around the surgical sites
  • thinner hair or different texture hair than the surrounding hair

Do hair transplants last?

Even though after hair transplants, you will have thick and fuller hair but you may continue to face hair thinning and loss with time. You may be required to follow-up transplants and get some ‘touch-ups’ procedures. The touch-up procedure can help by filling in any areas that are not thick enough or blending the follicles for the most natural look.

It is better to follow the post-surgery instructions given by the surgeon to make hair transplants last longer. This includes, not washing your hair for a few days and avoiding extraneous activities for a few weeks after transplantation.
