Has a cute pet guinea pig recently become your new family member?

Read this post attentively and learn how you should take care for your little friend, so as to always hear cheering guinea pig sounds and see its shiny eyes.

Happy cavies are always noisy. They become silent and taciturn only if there is something wrong with them. So, follow the following tips and you will have a happy, healthy and cute friend who will always manage to keep you in good mood.

The good care of every pet begins with right, healthy and fresh food. You should know that guinea pig pets have different tastes, but there are some things that they should necessarily have.

Feeding frequency

Guinea pig pets should be fed twice a day — in the morning and in the evening. You should supply your pet with all necessary vitamins that its organism requires. Timothy hay, vegetables and fruits are a must, but you can also add special guinea pet food, which is available in many pet stores.

They usually don’t overeat, but you should remember that your guinea pig will need 1/8 cup of special food per day, not more. You can give your guinea fresh Timothy hay in unlimited quantity, because it has three important functions — it aids their digestion, limits the growth of their teeth and satisfies their constant desire for gnawing. Every day offer a small amount of fresh fruits and vegetables to your guinea pig — try grapes, cucumbers, corn, peas, carrots and pears. A little cup of veggies and a slice of fruit for each pet will be OK.

Cavies should be supplied with 10 mg of Vitamin C per day (20 mg if pregnant), which they can receive from fresh raw fruits and vegetables. You can give them apples, oranges, broccolis, cabbage, carrots and spinach.

If your pets need additional Vitamin C, add it to their food and not to water, because they don’t like vitamins’ tastes, so they can refuse to drink the water, which can lead to the problem of dehydration.

Guinea pig food should also contain enough calcium, as their teeth need to be steady enough for plenty gnawing.

Keep in mind that you should always introduce them new fruits and veggies to gradually avoid diarrhea (diarrhea is common among guinea pig pets) and be careful to clear the leftover food before it spoils. They should always have fresh and clean water. You can use an inverted bottle with a drinking tube, which is available in pet stores.

All the above mentioned is an important part of guinea pig care, because right nutrition is essential for your cavy’s health. They are small and don’t have a strong immune system, so you should be too careful, if you want to have a healthy, happy and noisy friend.
